Camoranesi to join Stuttgart: report

BERLIN (AFP) - Veteran Italy midfielder Mauro Camoranesi is poised to join Stuttgart in a deal that could be concluded on Monday, media reports suggested here.
"We are waiting on the medical, but it's football jerseys ooking good for Camoranesi," Stuttgart's sporting director Fredi Bobic was quoted as saying.
The 34-year-old Juventus player had been in talks to join English Premier League side Birmingham City but the move fell through over tax issues.

Although unbeaten, Ravens remain far from perfect

BALTIMORE (AP)—The Baltimore Ravens enter their third preseason game looking to hold onto the football, establish an offensive flow and fortify their defense.
Though unbeaten, the Ravens gave up 401 yards passing in a 23-3 victory over Washington last week. Baltimore has fumbled eight times in two exhibition games. The team’s leading rusher is Haruki Nakamura(notes), who ran 51 yards on a football jersey fake punt.
Most alarming is a unit that was repeatedly burned by the Redskins.
“You never want to give up a lot of yards,” defensive coordinator Greg Mattison said. “I think some of it was the secondary, some of it was pass rush, some of it was maybe not getting deep enough, some of it was great throws and catches. We’re not ready to panic by any means. That’s something we addressed as far as what we had to really concern ourselves with this week, and they did it.”
Eli Manning(notes) will start at quarterback for the Giants, his first game action since receiving stitches following a hard hit to the face on Aug. 16 against the New York Jets. He will be going up a defense that last week celebrated the return of cornerback Fabian Washington(notes) and is being cautious with Lardarius Webb(notes), both of whom are coming off knee operations.
Baltimore is also without injured free safety Ed Reed(notes), and will operate this season without cornerback Domonique Foxworth(notes) (knee).
But the Ravens still have middle linebacker Ray Lewis(notes), who chose to ignore the gaudy statistics the Redskins put up last Chiefs jersey week and focus on a six-game preseason winning streak that includes a 17-12 win over Carolina on Aug. 12.
“I think we’re right where we need to be,” Lewis said. “When you turn on our defensive film, one thing that you do like is (that) we haven’t given up a touchdown all preseason. That’s a bottom-line fact, no matter what big plays or what happened. A few mistakes here and there, correct them and then just get ready.”
Baltimore’s offense was supposed to be enhanced by the addition of wide receivers Anquan Boldin(notes) and Donte’ Stallworth(notes), but the first-team unit remains a work in progress. Then again, the top three rushers from last year—Ray Rice(notes), Willis McGahee(notes) and Le’Ron McClain(notes)—have a combined 12 carries.
“I’ve taken my reps in practice. I’ve gotten tackled by our defense,” Rice said. “Obviously, you want to play in the games. But I’m not worried about the amount of carries I’m getting. I’ve gotten a lot of carries and a lot of work done in training camp.”
Rice should see more action against the Giants, simply because coach John Harbaugh plans to use his starters for at least the first half. That might also mean more action for Boldin, who thus far has only two catches for 33 yards.
“I think we had a pretty good week of practice and preparation,” Boldin said. “We didn’t scheme or game plan for New York. We’re really focused on what we’re doing—our assignments and techniques.”
And keeping a tight grasp on the football. Baltimore’s eight fumbles include one by Rice, one by starting quarterback Joe Flacco(notes), two by backup quarterback Marc Bulger(notes) and one by Stallworth.
“First thing we need to work on Saturday night is ball security,” offensive coordinator Cam Cameron said. “We had five fumbles last week, and the previous week wasn’t one of our better efforts either. We think we emphasize it enough, but obviously we haven’t. We’re going to try to get that corrected. That would be our No. 1 goal coming out of Jaguars jersey the game.”
This is essentially the last chance for the Ravens to get it right in game conditions before the regular season opener on Sept. 13 against the Jets.
“Everybody knows we don’t play too much in the fourth preseason game (against St. Louis on Sept. 2),” Boldin said. “This preseason game here really shows where we are.”

Haynesworth plays extensively as Redskins top Jets

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP)—Albert Haynesworth(notes) is moving up the depth chart and maybe even smoothing things over with Mike Shanahan.
The Washington Redskins’ big defensive lineman played extensively with the starters after entering in the first quarter of the 16-11 victory over the New York Jets on Friday night.
“I felt good,” Haynesworth said. “But, I’ve still got a lot of nfl jerseys work to do.”
Haynesworth, who missed numerous practices because of a failed conditioning test, a sore knee and then an illness, said last week that Shanahan underplayed his medical condition.
Reports said Haynesworth was suffering from a muscle condition called rhabdomyolysis, but Shanahan told AOL Fanhouse last Sunday he was “not aware of that.” Shanahan had given various reasons for Haynesworth’s inability to practice, eventually attributing it to a headache.
The two spoke on Monday, and Haynesworth said they talked some more during the game “because I saved his life from getting hit in the head with a ball.”
Shanahan said he wanted get Haynesworth about 30 plays.
“I’m going over for dinner to his house, probably tonight,” Haynesworth said. “We’ll sit, have a cigar and talk. What I said last week is behind me. I don’t even remember what I said.”
Haynesworth also complained last week about being out with the backups in the third quarter of Washington’s 23-3 loss to Baltimore. He was on the field with the starters in the first half, moving around the line, playing mostly right defensive end.
“That’s what they wanted to do this week, so I practiced a lot at end to get a feel for it,” said Haynesworth, who finished with one tackle.
The Jets have a lot of work to do after scoring only their second in three preseason games. Far from the explosive offense many of the Jets predict they’ll be, New York struggled until Mark Sanchez(notes) connected with Dustin Keller(notes) for a 10-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter.
“We’re not overwhelmingly pleased,” Sanchez said, “but at the same time, I’m glad we got the chance in the second half to put together a nice little drive, play into the Vikings jersey fourth quarter and score.”
New running back LaDainian Tomlinson(notes) downplayed the Jets’ offensive woes.
“I think one thing people need to understand is we’ve been very vanilla this preseason,” said Tomlinson, who had 86 yards on 11 carries. “We won’t really gameplan until the season starts, so we’re doing fine.”
Larry Johnson(notes), competing with Clinton Portis(notes) and Willie Parker(notes) for a spot in the backfield for the Redskins (2-1), caught a screen pass from Richard Bartel(notes) and rumbled 15 yards for the winning score with 2:13 left.
Looking to rebound from a poor performance against Carolina last weekend, the Jets (1-2) were hurt by four turnovers and missed opportunities.
“You’re not going to win too many games, if any games, if you turn the ball over four times,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said. “That was the critical stat that jumps out.”
Ryan could hardly be confident in his offense after another preseason clunker. Sanchez finished 13 of 21 for 139 yards and an interception in just over three quarters for the Jets.
Rex Grossman(notes) started for the injured Donovan McNabb(notes) for Washington, and went 8 of 16 for 111 yards. Without McNabb, who missed the game with a sprained left ankle, the Redskins’ first-team offense couldn’t do much against the Jets’ starters on defense, but Washington still led in the fourth quarter.
Saints 36, Chargers 21
NEW ORLEANS (AP)—Undrafted rookie Chris Ivory turned a swing pass into a tackle-breaking, zigzagging, 76-yard score in New Orleans’ preseason victory.
Ivory’s 45 yards rushing and 76 yards receiving were the most of any player in the game. Drew Brees(notes) set the tone for New Orleans (2-1) with 240 yards passing, including touchdowns to Devery Henderson(notes) and Robert Meachem(notes).
Philip Rivers(notes) led two touchdown drives for San Diego (1-2).
Eagles 20, Chiefs 17
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)—Mike Kafka’s(notes) 18-yard pass to Riley Cooper(notes) in the closing seconds boosted Philadelphia past Kansas City, making Todd Haley 0-7 in preseason games as the Chiefs’ head coach.
The Chiefs’ offense got off to a horrendous start and Kevin Kolb(notes), attempting to replace Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb, sputtered most of his time on the field.
Chiefs rookie linebacker Cameron Sheffield(notes) was immobilized and had to be taken away on a cart after a helmet-to-helmet tackle on Mike Bell(notes) left him motionless on the field.
Falcons 16, Dolphins 6
MIAMI (AP)—Atlanta gave up only a field goal while Miami starting quarterback Chad Henne(notes) was in the game and beat the Dolphins.
Middle linebacker Curtis Dolphins jersey Lofton(notes) led the Falcons’ defensive charge with 11 tackles, two for losses. Erik Coleman(notes) intercepted a pass in the end zone, and the Dolphins (2-1) converted only one of eight third-down situations with Henne, who played one series into the third quarter.
Lawrence Sidbury(notes) had a sack, two quarterback hits and a tackle for a loss for the Falcons (2-1).

Walker errs on health care facts in debate

Madison — Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker inaccurately described the state's health care program for the poor this week - saying it was originally a temporary program when in fact it never was.
Walker, a Republican running for governor, in a debate Wednesday also said the program, called BadgerCare Plus, faces "all kinds of football jerseys fraud and abuse," but rampant fraud has not been identified.
On Thursday, Walker said he did not want to put time limits on BadgerCare Plus, as he appeared to indicate in the debate a day earlier. Walker said Thursday he was open to tightening income eligibility for the program, however.
Walker wasn't the only one to make a questionable statement in the debate. Former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann, Walker's opponent in the Sept. 14 Republican primary, said he wanted to take $810 million meant for a high-speed rail line from Milwaukee to Madison and use the money for tax cuts. But that money has been earmarked by Congress for rail and state officials have repeatedly said if Wisconsin doesn't take the money it will go to another state for its rail projects.
Walker said he improperly described BadgerCare Plus because candidates have to give short answers in debates. He said Thursday he opposed Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle's slight loosening of time limits on Wisconsin Works, or W-2, the state's welfare-to-work program. He said he believed allowing people to receive benefits longer had the effect of keeping people on BadgerCare Plus longer, and that was the point he was trying to make in the debate.
But the number of people on W-2 is just a fraction of those on BadgerCare Plus. About 772,000 people are enrolled in BadgerCare Plus, while fewer than 15,000 participate in W-2.
BadgerCare Plus serves poor people and is part of Medicaid, a health care program paid by state and federal taxpayers. Walker and Neumann said they supported trimming BadgerCare Plus, but did not discuss cuts to other Medicaid programs that serve the disabled and elderly.
"It was supposed to be a temporary step up as they moved into permanent employment," Walker said of reebok nfl jersey BadgerCare Plus in the debate. "Instead, under this governor, we've had the time limits go away and we see a permanent entitlement created, and that's brought about all kinds of fraud and abuse and problems not only there but in the child care component as well. That will stop when I'm governor."
But BadgerCare Plus and its precursor never included time limits. Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle expanded the program in 2007 but did not make changes affecting how long someone could be on the program. The program costs more than $1 billion a year, with the federal government paying 60% or more.
About half of BadgerCare Plus recipients have been in the program for more than two years, state records show. Almost 400,000 of them are working or are the spouse or child of someone who is working, according to state figures.
Republican Gov. Tommy G. Thompson created BadgerCare in 1997 as he overhauled welfare. It was meant to ensure low-income workers and their families would have health care. As a member of the Assembly at the time, Walker voted for it.
The hope was that most people would eventually move into jobs that would provide health care, but officials knew there would always be some who weren't able to find such a job or who wouldn't find one for years, said Joe Leann, a Republican who served as Thompson's health and family services secretary at the time.
"There was no time limit envisioned," Leann said. "BadgerCare was intended to be there for however long (low-income) people were working jobs that didn't We need low-income families to stay healthy . . . provide health care. and productive."
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, the major Democrat in the race, declined to participate in the debate but pounced Thursday on Walker's comments.
"There Scott Walker goes again, saying anything to try to get elected," Barrett said in a statement. "For someone who voted for BadgerCare, Walker knows full well his campaign claims are just plain false."
Barrett has proposed trimming $200 million from BadgerCare Plus by insisting participants are more cost-conscious, but a Journal Sentinel review last month found that would be incredibly difficult to achieve.
Walker did not provide a source for claiming there was "all kinds of fraud and abuse" in BadgerCare Plus, but said Thursday he nfl jersey authentic was talking about inefficiencies and waste as well as fraud.
In 2008, the nonpartisan Legislative Audit Bureau analyzed 9.4 million Medicaid payments from fiscal year 2006 and found fewer than 100 that were questionable. They were worth $268,000, a small fraction of the $4.2 billion spent on Medicaid that year.
Democrats in the Legislature, however, have blocked a move by Republicans to have auditors specifically look into Medicaid fraud.

Waukesha mayor wants to paint '67 artwork

Waukesha — As part of his effort to freshen up City Hall with a new coat of paint, Mayor Jeff Scrima thinks a massive concrete wall sculpture in the building's main foyer by renowned artist Franklin Boggs could stand a little color, too.
The two-story concrete relief sculpture - called "Waukesha Wall" - was commissioned for the new City Hall in 1967 when Boggs was a successful international artist and chairman of the Beloit College art department.
Boggs, who died last November at age 95, created a two-story abstract structure filled with symbols representative of nfl jerseys Waukesha's make-up.
Scrima threw the question about painting the piece to the Public Arts Committee this week, without resolution. He also outlined his goal to have Waukesha "the number one arts city in America in eight years."
"We need to dream big," he told the committee.
While committee members were non-committal about painting Boggs' sculpture, Scrima's suggestion about coloring the sculpture is a nightmare to Betty Hoff, the local artist who brought 185 history-related pieces of art to the building hallways between 1998 and 2006.
"He asked me the same thing," Hoff said about Scrima's idea. "I said, 'Whaaaaat?' You do not paint over Van Gogh's painting to improve him. I was just appalled."
She added, "It would be sacrilegious to do that."
The artist's widow, Sondra Boggs, reached by telephone at her Beloit home Thursday, was asked what she thought her husband would think.
"I know Frank would not try to dictate anything specific about his work after it left his hands," she said. "It's sort of like letting a child go into the world."
She said any decision about a commissioned piece by her husband should be left up to the owners.
"If they have any respect for artwork, they should know what they're doing, I would hope," she said.
Jeff Seymour, whom Scrima appointed to the nfl jersey shop Public Arts Committee, told members he saw no problem with painting a work it owned.
"I think it could be updated," he said. "Have fun with it."
In a later interview, however, Seymour said that since the meeting he'd researched Boggs, whose work he was unfamiliar with.
"After doing research about him, I would be less for touching the integrity of the piece," he said. "Removing it might be more appropriate than painting it."
Boggs was a combat artist during World War II whose paintings have appeared in major art museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.
One of his murals was installed at Marquette University in 1953 - a work in the former Brooks Memorial Union that has since been demolished. He earned an international reputation as a muralist and innovator of large-scale concrete wall sculptures like that in Waukesha.
Scrima said his main goal is to get City Hall corridors painted - a job he says will be done by volunteers during two weekends in September with paint provided out of the city budget. He called the committee together to decide what should happen to the existing art collection that Hoff organized and what should happen to Boggs' and other sculptures in the foyer.
Seymour said the committee wants to retain some of authentic nfl jersey the existing historic works that Hoff introduced through donations while making room for rotating local artists' works on the government building's hallways.
Scrima told the Public Arts Committee he hoped it would take up other topics in the future. Chicago Bears LT Chris Williams: One undersold aspect of Williams' horrible day against Oakland Raiders endbacker Kamerion Wimbley last week is that offensive coordinator Mike Martz and offensive line coach Mike Tice refused to give Williams advanced protection help because (wait for it) ... they cheap nfl jerseys don't want to give away their blocking schemes. Williams, who is a serviceable tackle at best, was beaten by Wimbley for four sacks, and part of the problem was that left guard Roberto Garza was getting beaten inside, which forced Williams' eye off his own man. Chicago's coaching staff had better implement a few bunch sets or tight end stacks unless the idea is to get Jay Cutler killed.

Seattle Seahawks LT Mansfield Wrotto: Now that first-round pick Russell Okung is out with a high ankle sprain, it's up to Wrotto - a former defensive tackle and offensive guard -- to guard Matt Hasselbeck's blind side. The Seahawks had surprisingly good pass protection against the Packers last week with Wrotto on the left side, but Wrotto wasn't facing everyone's favorite Rhinestone Cowboy, Jared Allen. It's indicative of the level of play right tackle Sean Locklear is bringing to the table that he hasn't been moved to the left side - Seattle's previous front office gave Locklear a rich contract with incentives for his percentage of play on the left side. Now, he's much less of a factor.

Arizona Cardinals QB Derek Anderson: Cards head coach Ken Whisenhunt has said that he's benching Matt Leinart after Leinart's sub-par Monday Night Football performance. While this has started a string of talk about the former first-round pick reuniting with ex-USC and Cleveland Browns jersey current Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll in a trade, Whisenhunt's current concern is how to get a serviceable passing game together. Derek Anderson, the quarterback starting against the Chicago Bears on Saturday, didn't exactly light up the sky against Tennessee, either. If Anderson wants to establish himself as the long-term starter, he'll have to take care of the little things - like not air-mailing short slants in the red zone.

Minnesota Vikings S Tyrell Johnson: Johnson, a third-year safety, has been a pointman in Minnesota's disappointing pass defense. But Jamarca Sanford started at strong safety against the 49ers last week, and Johnson needs to fire back with his next chance. Most eyes will be on Brett Favre when the Vikings take on the Seahawks, but if the Vikings want to get to the Super Bowl with their precious quarterback, they need to solve a few issues in the secondary.

Washington Redskins DT Albert Haynesworth: Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan has said that Haynesworth will play end and nose tackle against the Jets' dominant offensive line. However, he will not start with the first team, as Shanahan is still trying to make sure that Cincinnati Bengals jersey Haynesworth is in game shape by the time the season starts. It would behoove Mr. Haynesworth to look good against the first-teamers as often as he is able, and to blow up the second team later in the game. Anything less will add yet more drama to a situation that everybody's already tired of following.

Garland’s dream picks: Air Force pilot or Broncos

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – As a little boy, Ben Garland(notes) clutched a poster of the Air Force Thunderbirds, the planes roaring into the sky, and he knew exactly what he wanted to be. He pinned that poster to his bedroom wall, beside the pictures of football jersey John Elway, and he told his mother, Syndee, he was going to the Air Force Academy someday.

From then on, his life was planned. He wore Air Force shirts to school, made lists of what it would take to get into the Academy, and thought of little else than the Air Force and the jets he would someday thrust through the clouds.

He loved football too. And, like all kids in Grand Junction, Colo., he adored the Broncos. There were times he envisioned himself a Bronco. His closet at home was filled with Elway T-shirts, and when he didn’t wear an Air Force shirt to school he wore his Elway jersey. But football was a fantasy. While other kids dreamed of the NFL, Garland imagined the roar of the engines, the shaking of the cockpit.
The Air Force wasn’t a fantasy. The Air Force was real.
Then everything he dreamed about came true. He was accepted to the Academy, played for its football team and graduated last spring. He landed an elite place in pilot-training school in Del Rio, Texas, and got an appointment to report late this winter.
But he had also become very good at football. So good, in fact, the Broncos signed him as a free agent and invited him to their training camp. Suddenly, Garland, who had planned his life since he was a little boy, had a decision he never imagined: Fly or play football.
”Can you imagine you had two dreams as a little kid?” he asks one day at Broncos training camp, where he is trying to make the team as a defensive end. ”One to be a pilot in the Air Force and one to play for the Broncos? Not just any team. The Broncos. And now you have both opportunities before you?”
The problem? He can’t have both. There is time for just one. So he must pick. If he likes his odds as an NFL prospect and where he stands at the end of camp, he can request a sports waiver from the Air Force which will require him to spend two years in the service before making a try at the NFL again. But doing so means giving up his spot in flight school, which requires at least a five-year commitment in the Air Force.
Pick flight school and he can forget about football.
It’s a difficult decision: Fly for his country or play for his favorite team in his favorite sport.
And he isn’t sure which one he wants more.
Troy Calhoun saw this coming. The Air Force coach knew he had something wonderful in Garland when his defensive end sustained a right hand fracture last fall. He saw the injury and assumed Garland would miss at least a month, maybe two.
”Don’t worry, Coach,” Garland told him. ”I’ll be back tomorrow.”
The next day, Garland showed up to practice — his arm in a cast, ready to play. The player who was supposed to be out at least four weeks never missed a day.
”He just has sheer resiliency and toughness and fortitude,” Calhoun says.
The NFL loves stories like this. And as Garland grew bigger and more dominating in Air Force’s games his last year in school, it was only a matter of time before teams showed interest. When the Broncos called, he took six weeks of military leave he didn’t have. That means, essentially, he’ll have no vacation the next two years just so he can attend training camp as the longest of long shots.

He has been relentless in scrimmages, pouncing at the offensive linemen before him. Asked if he is wasting his time trying to make the team, players quickly shake their heads.

”His motor is the best I’ve ever seen in the NFL,” says tackle Ryan Harris(notes), who is entering his fourth season in the NFL. ”He belongs here, for sure.”

When the team runs sprints at the end of practices, Garland always wins the defensive race. This despite the fact he is 6-foot-5, 275 pounds and running against linebackers and defensive backs who are some of the fastest players in the NFL. It’s becoming clear that if he Denver Broncos jersey decides to give up flight training and comes back to football in two years, there will be some kind of opportunity waiting for him. And that has given him pause.

”[The NFL] has been everything and more that I thought it would be,” Garland says. ”I mean, it’s been a humbling experience. I’ve been kind of awestruck. You kind of get stars in your eyes when you put on the Broncos symbol. I’ve learned so much more about the game than I ever knew before.”

But then there is the Air Force.
The Air Force Academy never had to recruit Garland. Rather, he recruited it. In high school, he flooded the coaches with game tapes and letters explaining how hard he would work, how good he could be. Inquiries from other colleges piled up at the house, every school from Harvard to UCLA. Ben wasn’t interested. Whenever a school called, he said he was going to Air Force.
New Mexico wanted him badly. The Lobos invited him to take a recruiting trip, meet the football team.
”Don’t waste your free trip on me because I’ve already made up my mind,” he told the New Mexico coaches.
They insisted he visit anyway, and so he did. But it was pointless. When the Air Force finally offered its scholarship it was a quick, easy “Yes.”
By then, of course, he was already coming. Not wanting to leave an athletic admission to chance, he had plotted his way to the Academy for years. Syndee Garland remembers Ben, back in elementary school, preparing a list of all the requirements he would need to get into the Academy, committing them to memory. As he got older, he started checking them off. In high school, he joined clubs he thought would make him appear diverse to the Academy’s admissions committee. When he thought his résumé needed more padding, he ran for class office.
He even obtained the necessary congressional recommendation.
”He got in on his own; he didn’t have to use football,” Syndee says.
So now, after working through the only school he ever wanted to attend, fighting to get the cherished invitation to flight school and standing just months away from the only thing he ever hoped to do, how can he turn it down? Garland isn’t sure. This is what makes nighttime the worst. Night is when practice is over, there are no more meetings to attend or defenses to learn and he must sit alone in his room, pondering his future.
”That’s when it tears at you,” he says. ”That’s when you got to make a decision.”
He’s asked Calhoun. He’s asked his family. He’s made lists, writing down all the pros and cons of his choice, his future. Syndee Garland keeps hoping for a sign, something that makes the decision easier, like the Broncos telling him he doesn’t have a future in the game. But none come. The Broncos seem intrigued and the Air Force is waiting.
Perhaps the best example is Chad Hennings, the former Cowboys defensive linemen who picked flying over football in the early 1990s, only to have the Air Force downsize five years after he got in. He left, was signed by Dallas and became a football player.
Time is running out.
