30 Dec 10 Delusional Doc Rivers Continues To Justify Sulking Boston Celtics

Kevin C. Cox/Getty ImagesThis article can also be found at North Station Sports Since day one, I have been a fan of Doc Rivers. I liked him as a player and appreciated him as a coach. The former NBA point guard seemed perfectly equipped to handle the mega-ego's dropped on his clip board in the Summer of 2007. He proved that his freelance style of player-coaching was just what the Doctor ordered for a veteran team craving their first title. While most NBA skippers over-coach their teams and allow them to make very few Reebok Indianapolis Colts 18 Peyton Manning Realtree camo Jersey
decisions without the call of a play, Rivers allowed his players to be independent thinking. He allowed them to call upon their experience to carry them through slumping stretches while not wasting a time out. For two seasons this philosophy worked to perfection on most nights. As 2009 gave way to 2010, the Celtics were healthy, and deeperadding Rasheed Wallace and Marquis Daniels to the equation. As the talent continue to pile up on paper, the Celtics barked out lofty predictions of back-to-back titles, history-making defense, and 72 wins. The Celtics started out the season winning their first six games in convincing fashion. Their opponents were averaging 81.5 points per game and being out-rebounded on a nightly basis. All of the player/coaches predictions seemed to be coming true but, as the Celtics were rolling over opponents, trouble proved to be brewing early on. As early as November 4, the Celtics were showing cause for concern. They blew into Minnesota for a matchup against the lowly T-Wolves. They squeaked by them with a two point victory (92-90) but were out-rebounded, nearly tied in assists, and they allowed the Wolves to shoot 52 percent from the field. Cause for concern? At that moment, no.Two nights later the Celtics returned to the Garden to face the streaking Suns. The Celtics were still holding on to the boards but they were completely outhustled by the Suns as Jason Richardson scorched them for 34 points. I pinpointed that game as the first glimpse of the struggles that were to follow for this team. I re-watched that game this morning and, though the Celtics swagger was still in full effect, the lackadaisical style of basketball started to peak out of the parquet floor.Though soon after, the Celtics ripped off an 11-game win streak, it was the team's only convincing stretch of the season. Injuries soon set in and the Celtics slumped into a struggling band players paused by anticipation. All season long, the Celtics have played in anticipation.Anticipation of KG's return to form, anticipation of Big Baby's return, anticipation of the All-Star break, anticipation of the second half of the season. Possibly the most over-hyped injury of the season was that of Marquis Daniels. We all (including myself) put our faith in this stranger who was supposed to be a game changer. Doc continued to tell the media that Marquis is the missing link.Daniels has returned, the Celtics are healthy, and they are still anticipating. On Friday night, a healthy Celtics team could not compete with a lively and determined Houston team that was playing for nothing. The Celtics had every opportunity to close out the Rockets at home and failed. Now, as they have lost three straight home games, they are at risk of finishing this six game home stretch 2-4. Quite embarrassing. What did Doc have to say about it?We should have put it awaywe had chances, we had great shots, said Celtics coach Doc Rivers. We missed a ton of layups down the stretch. But there were so Reebok Minnesota Vikings 28 Adrian Peterson Realtree camo Jersey
many little plays to me. No matter if youre playing the Rockets or Clevelandit didn matter who you were playingyou had to make those plays and we didn make them. So that was a disappointment.(Courtesey of the Boston Herald)"Disappointment" Doc? Really? It's more than "disappointing." It has become embarrassing. When is some one going to stand up and say it? Kevin Garnett had something to say about it:It what it is. I think for the most part the effort is there, the assignments are there...I guess teams are adapting and making plays and making adjustments toward the defense, and theyre just making shots. That all I can tell you.(Courtesy of the Boston Herald) "It is what it is...?"Did I just hear that correctly?Did that come out of the BIG TICKET'S mouth?"It is what it is..." makes me think this team (including their spiritual leader and savior of 2007-2009) are fine with the recent play. Sounds like the lack of urgency in figuring out how to remedy these disturbing deficiencies have trickled down from the befuddled coaching staff's predictable postgame rhetoric to the heart of the team.Oh...and Kevin, if "the effort is there," I am not seeing it. Their seems to be very little effort and that's why the Garden continues to rain down boo's and get more involved in "peanut butter and jelly time" than any cheer that may make them look silly when they are let down.In a season where individual franchise records have been broken by Pierce and Rondo, the Celtics have been unable to pull together as a unit. The body language is awful, their is zero camaraderie or team spirit, winning seems to be secondary and no lead has been too big. The C's have always been a team with a celebrated locker room. Not this season! Locker room divides have been evident all season. The emerging youth movement seems to be on a detour around the aging core unit, and it's now hurting the team. The Celtics cannot rely on the Big Three showing up every night because that kind of dominance from the three senior members of the roster is now in the rear view mirror. This was never more on display than during the closing minutes of Friday's night's home loss to the Rockets.Ray Allen launched only two shots and was fouled out in 16 minutes of play. Kevin Garnett pulled in only three rebounds on a night that the C's were again dominated on the boards (41-35/15-11 O-boards). Garnett also missed four consecutive, clutch shot's in the closing minutes. Reebok Minnesota Vikings #4 Brett Favre Realtree camo Jersey
Coming down the stretch in regulation, Doc Rivers decided to go to his old faithful play of isolating Pierce at the elbow. Pierce drove, pump faked and received no reaction from his (2) defenders. The play was forced and failed while Rajon Rondo stood idle on the perimeter with his 23 points, 10 assists, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals. Why is Doc so ridged? Why doesn't he trust Rondo down the stretch? I notice it. I am frustrated by it. Do you think Rondo may be a bit frustrated too?Pierce is undoubtedly the leader of the Celtics. He is the captain and a lifer in green and deserves the respect of fans and teammates. Pierce, however, is no longer the only player who can create offense in clutch situations. Rondo has become the future of the franchise. Rondo needs the ball in his hands down the stretch. Just as the Celtics' Big Three are no longer the same players, neither is the team. When is Doc going to realize that? Rondo's new ability to hit jumpers, coupled with his blazing speed and ability to create good shot through penetrating and dishing is underutilized and it was never so obvious as in Friday's closing seconds.Doc's Reaction? We played like a high school team at times, as far as the way our thought process was. (Courtesy of the Boston Globe)Enough said Doc.

29 Dec 10 NBA To Investigate Players Sitting at the End of the Season

Ezra Shaw/Getty ImagesAs the NBA regular season comes to an end, it has been announced that the NBA is going to investigate healthyplayers sitting out games in order to rest for the upcoming playoff schedule.I may be wrong, but I do not recall such uproar in previous yearsover players resting heading into the playoffs. The fans discontentseems to stem from the fact that Cleveland Cavalier star LeBron James has ditched his jersey and shorts for a suit the final four games of their regular season.By all reports, James is perfectly healthy and Minnesota Vikings
he is sitting out games just to rest for the playoffs. The fans argue that if they are going to spend all the money it costs to go see an NBA game, their teamsshould be doing everything possible to win that game. Itundeniable that the Cavsgive themselves the best chance to win games with a healthyLeBron James on the floor.Fans who have a problem with James' decision torest point to Michael Jordan playing all 82 games during a run of three consecutive NBA championships despite having everything locked up heading into the final week of those three regular seasons. People say MJ did it for the fans because he understood that they came to the games tosee him playmuch like the fans in Cleveland mostly go to see LeBron.Maybe some of the Cavs fans should ask Portland if they wished their star player,Brandon Roy, could have rested the last couple games of the regularseason. Instead, the Trail Blazers were fighting for a better seed in the Western Conference and were forced to play Roy down the stretch. With just two games left before the end of the regular season, Roy tore his meniscus in a game against the Lakersand is now very questionable for the playoffs. Sure, the Trail Blazers are in the playoffs, but without a healthy Brandon Roy, who honestly New England Patriots jersey
thinks they can make a deep run?Cleveland fans need to realize justhow easy it is to get hurt playing basketball. Sure, LeBron could go in and play 15 to 20 minutes for the final couple games of the year. But is it worth it if onlyone bad fall, a rolled ankle, ora poke in the eye could end LeBron's season and the Cavs' hope for a title?I understand the fans want to see competitive basketball, but let look at the four games that LeBron missed. The Cavs did lose all four, but three of the four gameswereagainst playoff-bound teams. And with the exception of the final game, which was played by bench players for the most part, the Cavs lost by no more than six points in any of those games. The fans were not watching terrible basketball. If you don like seeing LeBron on the bench, then as a fan you should know better than to buy tickets to the last week of the season. Especially when you know there is a chance the Cavs could have everything locked up by then.It not like basketball is the only sport in the world to rest their players heading into the playoffs. It's done in football and baseball every single year and fans for the most part understand why.In the blink of an eye anyone could suffer a devastating injury, even if they are only on the court or field for a matter of minutesBrandon New Orleans Saints jersey
Roy's injury occurred less than 12 minutes into the game.I think it ridiculous for the NBA to looking into this "situation" at all. It's the goal of every team heading into the seasonto win a championship. If thecoachthinks resting their star player for a couple games gives them the best chance to win, then no one outside of the team or organization should have any say in the matter.

28 Dec 10 A Definitive Explanation Of Why Kobe Bryant Is Better Than LeBron James

Stephen Dunn/Getty ImagesSo, I just read an article titled: A Definitive Explanation of why LeBron James is better than Kobe Bryant. Now, there was nothing at all definitive in this "article" so I'd like to respond to the myth that LeBron James has somehow "surpassed" Kobe BryantReason number 6: Kobe Kansas City Chiefs jersey
Bryant at this age was a far better scorer81 points. Enough said. Kobe at his best was by far the most dynamic scorer this decade. His game consisted of vicious slashes to the hoop, acrobatic layups and dunks, and an increasingly-deadly mid range jumper. Not a single defender in the NBA could stop Kobe Bryant. There were plenty of defenders who came out as the "Kobe Stopper" a la Ruben Patterson, but none could even come close to slowing the self-proclaimed Black Mamba.LeBron, regardless of what his fans say, has a limited offensive aresnal consisting of bulling his way to the hoop, a shaky midrange jump shot, and 5-6 three-pointers a game that go in around 30 percent of the time. LeBron struggles when he can't get into the paint.Reason number five: ClutchKobe Bryant is the most clutch player in NBA history. Not MJ, not Jerry West, not Reggie Miller. No player in NBA history has shown the ability to not only dominate the last four minutes of a game, but hit buzzer-beating shots with the consistency of Kobe Bryant. This year alone, he hit six game-winning jumpers. That doesn't include the numerous times he dominated the fourth quarter.LeBron fans will point to LeBron's dominance in the final minutes. Yet he has not shown clutch ability in a key situation yet, save for one desperation heave at the buzzer in last year's playoffs.Reason number four: AdaptabilityKobe Bryant has made every change ever needed to make sure he stays on top. Once he lost the blistering speed and agility that defined his early career, he developed his already potent to mid range jumper to the best in NBA history (that's right haters. Kobe's mid range jumper is the best the NBA has ever seen.) As he aged more, he worked with Hakeem Olajuwon and developed a deadly post game to compliment his jumpers. Even being 3 inches shorter and 20 pounds lighter, Kobe's post game is much more polished and effective than LeBron James'.How will LeBron fare once his tremendous athleticism fades? Will he finally develop a consistant jumper? Will he finally learn to operate with his back to the basket?Reason number three: Work EthicComing straight to you live from LeBron James' mouth, "Kobe's the hardest Miami Dolphins jersey
worker I've ever seen. His motivation is outstanding." Kobe's dedication to all facets of the game, whether it's weights or free throws or his new found post game, Kobe is never satisfied. His dedication to the game of basketball is what makes the above point even possible. Coming from the "king" himself, Kobe's work ethic is what helps him transcend the realm of typical stardom.Reason number two: DefenseThis is where the LeBron fans cry out "He's an all defensive first team!" Yes, but so is Kobe Bryant, and the difference in their path to this acknowledgement is what leads to this point.LeBron is not a lock-down defender; it is that simple. He is a help defender that sags off his man to help with blocking shots and grabbing rebounds on the weak side, which is partially responsible for his inflated steals and blocks stats.Kobe Bryant is up there with Shayne Battier and Ron Artest in the group of most potent perimeter defenders in the game. Perhaps the best evidence is the Lakers-Thunder series, where we saw Derek Fisher repeatedly abused by Thunder guard Russell Westbrook. In game five, Kobe made life miserable for the point guard, denying him access to the paint and holding him to sub-35 percent shooting for only 15 points.Reason number one: ClassinessThis one is personal. This is me speaking for the many Laker fans who can't stand jabs that Kobe is not a classy player, or he's too grim, and LeBron's a cool, fun-loving guy.LeBron James is a clown, and that's coming from one who's deceased grandfather was a clown. When Kobe won an MVP award, did he go around with a "Kobe Bryant MVP" shirt on? No, he had no need to. He had already proven himself. He was focused on a title bid that ultimately fell short to a tough, physical Minnesota Vikings
Celtics team.LeBron can celebrate all he wants, but he needs to know that he comes off as arrogant. Which brings me to the handshake. You know, where LeBron refused to shake hands with the Magic team that defeated his Cavaliers last season.Kobe did not do the same thing after being humiliated by the Celtics in Boston. He shook hands with his conquerors, as painful as it might have been. Kobe did not feel the need to flaunt his MVP award. And while LeBron James can tout his MVP award, Kobe can tout his fourth championship ring and first finals MVP.There you have it, now bring on the haters and LeBron worshippers

27 Dec 10 Miami Heat Needs a Big Man: Get Los Angeles on the Phone Again

After dealing with the inconsistencies of Jermain O'Neal for the past season and a half, the Miami Heat are finally free of his $21 million deal. The Heat are now on the market for a starting center, hopefully, this doesn't include the signing of another PF to play center. The Heat organization has to look Cincinnati Bengals jersey
t the bigger picture, and that being, size matters. Just ask the Utah Jazz and Phoenix Suns. Miami needs a 7'0" that will focus on controlling the paint on the defensive end. His offense shouldn't be that important because the Heat with Wade, Beasley and whoever they sign with their cap space, should be more than enough.THE OUTLOOK Getting a good player at this position will be as difficult a task as any for the Heat this off-season. The center position, historically, is usually hard to find a good to great player. The Free Agent pool isn't even knee deep with talent, at least not with anyone that would be a better fit than either O'Neal (Shaq and Jermaine )... I know, scary thought. However, the Heat does have some decent options in acquiring a player that can play the position for the next three to five years. If Miami is gonna have any chance at landing a starting center, they'll in all likelihood, have to do it through a trade.TOP 10 OPTIONS FOR THE HEATKris Kaman, Kyrylo Fresenko , Brendan Haywood , Joel Pryzbilla, Hasheem Thabeet, Darko Milicic , Al Jefferson, Kwame Brown , Spencer Hawes and Tyson Chandler. Option One is my favorite, trade for Kris Kaman (29-years-old, 7'0" and 260lbs. ) The Clippers have 33 million tied into just five players next season (Davis, Kaman, Griffin, Gordon and Jordan.) Being that they have the eighth pick, in a draft laced with talented bigs, they might be willing to move Kaman and his $11 million contract. It's either him or DeAndre Jordan (center of the future.) They need to move Kaman because they only have about $10 million to fill out the rest of their roster. All the Heat would need to do is offer up two second round draft picks and maybe a future first round pick. Option Two is probably the easiest, signing restricted free agent, Kyrylo Fesenko (23-years-old, 7'1" and 300lbs. ) The second year player had a brilliant showing in the playoffs and has as big a up-side as any free agent center this summer. He's still a project but he understands enough about rebounding, defending and passing out of the post to be a good starting center for years to come. The Heat would simply need to offer him upwards of $3 million in a four year deal and that would be enough to land the restricted Cleveland Browns jersey
free agent. The Jazz don't have much cap room and need to sign, SG, Wesley Matthews. They'll be more likely to use their ninth pick in the draft to go after another young center.Option Three is probably the most logical rout to take, signing free agent, Brendan Haywood (30-years-old, 7'1" and 265lbs. ) Brendan is currently the second best option on the market (behind David Lee, a natural PF.) He earned just six million dollars last season and might want a increase this season. The way the Heat might luck up is, only seven teams are looking for a starting center outside of Miami (NYK, DET, HOU, SAS, SAC, MIN and DEN,) the Heat simply need to put a three-year-deal on the table at a six to seven million dollars a year, and it would be a done deal.Option Four is one that they probably aren't even considering, trading for Joel Przybilla (30-years-old, 7'1" and 255lbs .) The Blazers inked Marcus Camby to an extension at the end of this past season and currently have Greg Oden signed for two more seasons. It makes no sense for them to keep Przybilla and his near eight million dollar contract. The good thing about the deal, is, it would come off the books after this up-coming season. If he has a great season, the Heat would hold his Bird Rights. The Heat simply need to offer up two of their second round draft picks and the Blazers would jump off the table.Top remaining players that the Heat can sign through free agency:David Lee, Darko Milicic, Drew Gooden, Jermaine O'Neal, Kwame Brown and Patric O'Bryant.Top remaining players the Heat can acquire through a trade:Hasheem Thabeet, Spencer Hawes, Tyson Chandler and Al Jefferson.IN CONCLUSIONThe Heat are in a good position to get a good center, they simply need to think outside the box. I have little doubt that the Heat will use it's 18th pick in this draft on, Solomon Alabi , the 7'1" and 255lb center from Florida State. But should they somehow pass on a center, Pat better have a plan and reason Dallas Cowboys jersey
why. Pat Riley is favored throughout the NBA for his character and what he has done for the NBA brand. It's time he got on the ball and started making moves he should have already thought of. Anyway, here's to hoping the Heat lands a seven footer that will crash the boards and clog up the lane.

26 Dec 10 How the NY Knicks helped the Boston Celtics get to the NBA Finals

Jim Rogash/Getty ImagesIt been a season of memorable highs and forgettable lows for one Nathaniel Cornelius Robinson. After enjoying his best season in 2008-09, where he averaged 17.2 points and 4.1 assists per game and won his second Sprite Slam Dunk Championship, Robinson re-signed withReebok Pittsburgh Steelers #86 Hines Ward Realtree camo Jersey
the New York Knicks for one year and his star appeared to be on the rise. But on December 1, 2009, Robinson world took a drastic turn for the worse when he became persona non grata in Knicks head coach Mike DAntoni playing rotation. The 25-year-old Robinson would not see a single minute of action for 14 consecutive games due to irreconcilable personality differences between player and coach.Click Boston-Celtics-into-NBA-Finals#" target="_blank"here to read the rest of this article on Examiner.com.

25 Dec 10 Allen Iverson: The Fallen Philadelphia Sixers Superstar

Allen Iverson jogged from the bench upon being called last, arms raised high above his head. He was recognizable in every way, from the headband, the hair, to the sleeve on his right arm. The jersey was baggy, but really, I wouldn want to see AI any other way. The spotlight shined; there was no mistaking him.Despite that, the familiarity of his entrance was rendered odd. The uniform required no further proof of exile without the logo of the NBA. Once adored and idolized on the rightful courts of world most prominent stage, he now plots a comeback whereReebok Arizona Cardinals Larry Fitzgerald Realtree camo Jersey
the limelight had moved on, yet the failures are too clear for all to see.As the story of Allen Iverson stands, it far from a happy ending. The iconic superstar who dominated the court with a go big or go home mentality is forced to do the latter, except he now has to call Istanbul so. Nothing against Turkey basketball, but AI doesn belong there.Never once did I think that I would rather see Allen Iverson without a basketball jersey. For any player, putting on a uniform is a kind of recognition; it admits skill and achievement. For someone nicknamed The Answer, the Black Eagles jersey he now wears exposes his weakness, announces defeat.Honestly, I never thought his departure from the NBA would fare well. To see him in a European uniform, trying his best to prolong maybe just half of what once was, turns his misfortune into tragedy. There are no reasonable explanations as to why Iverson would resort to play for the Besiktas Cola Turka Black Eagles, a second tier ball club that doesn even participate in the Euroleague, Europe most acclaimed. Instead, Iverson will be splitting time between competing in the Eurocup and the Turkey League. Putting it in perspective, it is as if he is participating in the D-league instead of the NBA equivalence on the other side of the Atlantic.Among my first guesses were financial setbacks, a bad management decision, or the simple desire to compete. Perhaps this will serve as a genuine F-you to the association, which has long blackballed him for the hip-hop culture he paved the way for. Yet, none of these came close to a logical motive for the former MVP and scoring champion. This man is one of the best to have played the game. Playing anywhere except the NBA is unacceptable. On the other hand, this may be a blessing in disguise. While diminished, his skill set most certainly can still contribute at a high level in Turkey. If Stephon Marbury can keep up a 23 points, 9.5 assists stat sheet, AI will manage just fine. Two years for four million dollars seems like a fair deal considering the veteran minimum and non-guaranteed contract he signed for during his last stints.Frankly, I wished he would back out on this like he did to Detroit, to Memphis, and to all the times he backed down at no one. When his debut was postponed, I was sure he wasn going to play a single game. It was welcoming news. Then, AI scored 15 points in his first game in the Eurocup, and more importantly, his first game overseas. Not bad for a guy who barely played in the last two years, but not quite the impressive All-Star performance, either. At this point, people who still paid attention to him did so for only one reason: paying their due diligence as a die hard fan. AI was still tough, although watching videos of Reebok Baltimore Ravens #5 Joe Flacco Realtree camo Jersey
him made it even worse, because he was nowhere close to his old self. The optimism for his supremacy is now non-existent.Those of us who still cared tuned to NBA TV for his debut in the Turkish league. The result? Two points and four rebounds in 19 minutes of play. My fear stays justified. This is him, going out in a whimper, on a distant land where he isn even known by some, let alone beloved. He isn going across the ocean to popularize basketball, not even to salvage his career. Those are tales of old. He is just holding on to whatever he can now. He did score 18 points in his second game in the Eurocup, but at this point he has no one convinced. So, is it because of money?Apparently, yes.Kate Fagan, credible beat writer of the Philadelphia Inquirer, flew to Istanbul herself to confirm what the fans, and perhaps AI himself, are unwilling to admit:The 76ers former all-everything guard is broke;by all accounts except his own;and playing here in Istanbul for a number of reasons, none of which is to become an ambassador for Turkey solid, but often overlooked, professional league.I baffled, but not really. Surprised? I hope I can say so. But who actually put their money on a happy ending?Even as a cautionary tale, he is forgotten by most now. Maybe that is why he chose Europe. There comes a time for every man to swallow his pride, and it is easier to do so without all the judging eyes here. AI can finally catch a breath and run at his own pace.Of course, that is just a polite way of saying he is unwanted and broke. The truth is, we all kind of anticipated this day to happen. Him being in Turkey was the worst scenario we never permitted ourselves to even imagine. We knew exactly what a lifestyle of frivolous gambling and drinking entails. Be sure to pile that on top of the number of people that basically robbed him financially. On the other hand, the curiosity he generates can probably last him a few more rounds elsewhere, and certainly in China. He better make the money count this time around, too, given how fast an estimate of 154 million dollars was seemingly spent, excluding his endorsements with various big-named companies. If only he doesn bail out of an unfavorable situation for once, that is. To make matters worse, he recently launched an Ebay account auctioning off memorabilia. As unfitting as the situation is, AI should be thankful of this opportunity. This is somewhat evident in a recent interview with David Hein, where he said all the right things about the team, the adjustments, and the opportunity.Nobody leaves on top. Few stars go out like they should, but fewer player of AI stature go out the way he is right now. His situation will be compared to the likes of Shawn Kemp, Eddy Curry, Antoine Walker, and many more. Suddenly, it becomes another generic account of a rich athlete being foolish with his money. Even then, not one person on that list comes close to revolutionizing the game the way The Answer did.It was always a Reebok Baltimore Ravens #27 Ray Rice Realtree camo Jersey
battle when he stepped on the court. Regardless of your opinion of him, it impossible to deny his heart. Night in and night out, he gave it his all, and set the curve for playing one heart out. Many greats have identical attributes of ambition, passion and drive, but as far as being a warrior, AI outmatches anyone with ease. It is disheartening to see most of the new generation of players lacking this fundamental essence of the game. Then again, David Stern always favored whatever The Answer stood against. An ego maniac, undisciplined player, ailing star. Allen Iverson is all of this. He is also the reason behind the tattoos, headbands, cornrows, and a representation of staying true to oneself. The accomplishments are undeniable. So are the trends he shaped.Throughout various points in his career, he earned the approval he deserved, one of the most symbolic being David Stern apologizing to the airbrushed removal of his tattoos on a magazine cover. I think we all can acknowledge that any man is responsible for his own actions. That being said, not one team in the league can offer a roster spot for him?Looking at it subjectively, however, his brilliance did mask a lot of the problems that have been there since day one, since his final appearance, since Melo and him couldn win it. When he was kicked around the league like a hackie sack, the problems came to light.Evaluating Iverson, especially as a fan, it is often easy to overlook the statistical revolution that is setting trends in most NBA front offices. On paper, Iverson is an inefficient volume scorer, mediocre passer and a liability on team defense. He steals the ball a lot, but that also plays a part in his high turnover numbers. His dominance is based on speed and athleticism as much as skill. In reality, he is not good for all but scoring. When his efficiency plummeted as a result of not getting to the foul line like he used to, his value took a nosedive. Most of all, his presence on teams so far has been cancerous as much as it has been constructive. To those without a soft spot for him, it is too messy to clean the train wreck up.What is unsettling to me is the NBA continual exploitation of AI, despite not wanting to have anything to do with him. At one point, on NBA.com, they showed the love he got from the Turkish fans, then reported about his debut. He is now being used as an international marketing tool, a globalizing strategy, surely without his consent. This is just the conspiracy theorist in me talking, but I am having a hard time considering otherwise. David Stern never ceases to amaze me for being the sly fox that he is.Nevertheless, there is still a tiny part of me inside that is confident that he can play his way onto an NBA roster midseason. A few contenders still can use Reebok Baltimore Ravens #52 Ray Lewis Realtree camo Jersey
a little guy who can score and setup his teammates. He will rule, part farewell with Turkey, and eventually play well enough to make a few more years count. That is the fairytale ending Allen Iverson is worthy of. That is the what we want to see The Answer live out.He surprised us before on a routine basis. He always played injured, yet was still one of the best men on the court on any given night. It is hard to mingle on the court at the listed height of six feet, but he did just so swiftly. We opened our mouths and widened our eyes when his ankle breakers schooled the best of them. He stirred the crowd the most when he was knocked down. Never once did he fail to get back up to inspire us.But I think anyone watching the basketball with a rational mind doesn see it happening anymore.Include those of us stuck in the past. I am still cheering with Larry on the sideline, Dikembe in the paint.I leave it to less than a 1% chance for a comeback to actually transpire.Come to think of it, his demise was abrupt. There wasn enough time to appreciate his last days in the NBA, however unsatisfying it was. All we have now are Youtube videos. The next time he headlines the news, it won be anything pleasant. The appeal of a foreign import will not be so attractive once the frequent and expensive maintenance hurts the wallet. Judging by how China refused to be bullied by Stephon Marbury, this could indeed be the last of AI.Saying all this cringes my heart, because I do miss Allen Iverson. The man will always be a legend and my favorite player.Nostalgia, that all it is.

24 Dec 10 Indiana Pacers Postgame: Hansbrough's Big Game Leads To Second Straight Win

Tyler HansbroughThe Pacers wanted to finish their final preseason home game on a positive note. Mission accomplished. The Pacers defeated the New Orleans Hornets on Friday night in a close game, 101-98. Josh McRoberts dove to the ground with just 12 seconds left and called a timeout for Reebok Green Bay Packers #52 Clay Matthews Realtree camo Jersey
the Pacers, as their lead was down to just one, after leading by 15 at halftime. James Posey hit both of his free throws, and the Pacers held a three-point lead. The Hornets were unable to get a three point shot to go down at the end of regulation, and the Pacers got their second win in a row, albeit the preseason. As the New Orleans Hornets came to town, they saw a familiar face in the new starting point guard for the Indiana Pacers. Darren Collison filled in for the injured Chris Paul last year, and did so well everyone has already labeled him a star.Darren Collison finished with 16 points, five assists, and four rebounds in 34 minutes of play.

23 Dec 10Kobe Bryant Owed Apology By Unreasonable Activists, Talking Heads for Commercial

Jonathan Daniel/Getty ImagesFor once, an athlete with a gun has caused a controversy that should fall squarely on the shoulders of his critics.I've been searching high and low for a single, legitimate argument as to why it is offensive that Kobe Bryant was in the new Call of Duty: Black Ops commercial. Detroit Lions
Or perhaps for that matter, why it was more offensive that Kobe was in the commercial rather than someone else. In case you haven't seen it, the video is included in this article.People have raised the "it sets a bad example for kids" argument, which is easily countered by the commercial's playful nature, similarity to numerous PG and PG-13 movies (no one even dies) and clearly stated "MATURE" rating for the game. But that isn't even the most laughable criticism. There is the "it fits in with the athletes and guns stereotype" argument, which calls to mind memories of Gilbert Arenas' personal fiasco and numerous other situations in which athletes have been wandering around with real guns and making threats using them. Gee, can anyone see the difference between that and Kobe being in a commercial?Further more, why would it be more offensive for Kobe to be in the commercial rather than any no-name actor? It wouldn't and it isn't.The critics are actually upset by the fact that the commercial supports a violent game. Last time I Green Bay Packers jersey
checked, violent games and commercials with guns are still legal in this country. There is no reason to suspend a broadcaster and advertisers' rights to do their jobs because a small sect of society is unreasonably sensitive to this particular issue.I'd buy this game just because of how awesome the commercial is.To the majority of Americans, the existence of violent commercials doesn't even pose a problem. When there is an actual problem with something being broadcast, there are federal policies that govern it.If this got past the federal safety net, it is likely because it was deemed a non-issue.So why should it bother anyone that Kobe was in an approved commercial? In fact, Kobe was in an awesome game commercial with a wonderful soundtrack ("Gimme Shelter" by The Rolling Stones). I'd like to commend the marketing gurus for Call of Duty. I've never previously bought one of their games, but after seeing that specific commercial I might have to. Job well done.If the NBA decided to punish Kobe for this in any regard, they would be Houston Texans jersey
setting a terrible precedent and simultaneously discouraging valuable business partnerships. So how much of our freedom as Americans should be controlled by the unreasonable opinions of a few ESPN talking heads who are trying to create news on a slow news day? I'd say absolutely none. And I'd say ESPN's talking heads owe Kobe Bryant an apology.

The Knicks Are Back with Amare Stoudemire Signing a 5 Year Contract

Christian Petersen/Getty ImagesAmare Stoudemire was all smiles as he went out after an afternoon meeting with a Knickerbocker cap as they reached an agreement in principle with a 5 year $99.7 million contract with the New York Knicks. So there won’t be any Chris Bosh playing in the garden or Philadelphia Eagles jersey
David Lee’s chances of returning to the roster but definitely they are a step higher on the Lebron James sweepstakes ahead of Chicago, New Jersey and Cleveland. The Knicks have been preaching about going to a better and brighter direction for years now and after making bad decisions after another it became a monotonous speech every year but this time there won’t be any wrong decision in acquiring Stoudemire and if they could sign one marquee player like Wade or James then this season would be the fruition of all those promises. Amare’s almost a $100 million contract is worth every penny with a double-double player who provides the offense and the defense needed by the Knicks from the paint it almost erase the blunder the Knicks made by Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
signing Jerome James and Eddy Curry to fat contracts. Amare whom the Knicks bypass in the 2002 draft choosing Nene Hilario played only with the Phoenix Suns for the entirety of his career and when the Suns offered a 5 year $71 million contract with only 3 years full guarantee and the last 2 years with a 50 percent guarantee which will turn to full depending on Amare’s minutes, the Knicks readily offered him a much better preposition with 5 years full guaranteed contract. There won’t be any major changes for the Knicks with Amare’s familiarity of his former coach now running the Knick’s system Mike D’Antoni. Now there is one more space to fill in and with enough salary cap they are focusing now on James and Wade. And with Wade’s inclination in signing back to Miami or to his hometown Chicago it looks like the Knicks and James has a lot of catching up to do but like any chess match the Knicks have already made the first move. They know James wanted Stoudemire way back in February when Lebron was vocal in demanding Amare before the trade deadline. Now the Knicks offered Stoudemire to the table and Lebron has the chance to play side by side with a player who could match San Diego Chargers jersey
his versatility and athleticism. There was a reason why the Phoenix Suns offered only 3 years full guarantee for Amare. His history with injuries in the knee and eyes prove to be the biggest factor but beyond those scarred knees and retinas the Knicks have one thing in their mind and signing Amare could bring them closer to him… It’s all about Lebron, it was really all about him from the start. Being the front runner for Lebron it’s still not a guarantee… But whatever happens at least they still have Amare in their roster, something to look forward to no Eddy Curry’s or Jerome James’s… “The Knicks are back,” said Amare… they definitely are.

Philadelphia Phillies Sign Cliff Lee To 5-Year Contract

Jed Jacobsohn/Getty ImagesIn a shocking development, the Philadelphia Phillies reached an agreement on a 5 year, 115 million dollar contract. Also, there will be a vesting option that is very easily to be achieved. Basically, It is a 6 year deal. Overall, Lee will be making more money per year than if he had made the deal with the Yankees or Rangers. What is the Fallout of this deal? The Yankees now do not have a top of the league rotation anymore. They will have to convince Andy Pettite to come back for another year. Although the Yankees have one of the most explosive lineups in Reebok Baltimore Ravens #5 Joe Flacco Realtree camo Jersey
baseball, they have not made any progress this off-season. In order to make up for the lost time, the Yankees will have to work quickly to make a deal for Zack Grenkie, or put significant work into their bullpen to make it unstoppable. Either way, they will need Phil Hughes and Ivan Nova to step up.The Phillies have one of the best rotations in MLB history. Cliff Lee. Roy Halladay. Cole Hamels. Roy Oswalt. Its scary to think that they have four aces on their team now. It appears the money that was offered to Jayson Werth was then thrown at Lee to get this deal done. There is no team that has close to as much depth in their rotation as the Phillies. They are now the favorites to win the National League by a long shot. They will have to be active during the rest of the off-season as well. Their bullpen has struggled for the past couple of years, so they will need to address that issue. They will also need to trade Joe Blanton, because they simply do not have the money to pay him and four aces. I assume this will happen soon. As Buster Olney of ESPN has said, "The irony is that no team was more convinced that Lee would chase every last nickel than the Phillies -- who traded him because of this."Where do you think Cliff Lee should have signed?Where do you think Cliff Lee should have signed?New York Yankees18.2%Philadelphia Phillies75.8%Texas Rangers6.1%Washington Nationals0.0%Total votes: 33The Rangers should not have been offering the enormous contracts that they offered. Their final offer was 161 million for 7 years, making them the high bidder (if vesting the option taken into account). This team would have had no flexibility in the future. It would have taken away from the money that they will use to extend some of their young studs (Andrus, Feliz). They had been Reebok Baltimore Ravens #27 Ray Rice Realtree camo Jersey
looking into Adrian Beltre for the past couple of days as a backup plan. He seems like a perfect fit for them. They have a huge need at 3B, and his power will translate to their ballpark. They will also explore a trade for Zack Grenkie. There is less worry for them than the Yankees over Grenkie cause of his history of anxiety related issues. He could thrive in Texas; however, the ballpark has historically been known to destroy pitchers. The Angles ultimately lose will lose out on all of their main targets this off-season (Crawford, Beltre). As a result, they will shift their focus to close Rafael Soriano. He is the best closer on the market by far this year. They have a whole at closer and a lot of money to spend on players. It is a perfect match. The biggest indirect winner from Cliff Lee's deal is the Boston Red Sox. They put themselves in a position where they can be called the favorites to win the American League. If the Yankees had gotten Lee, they would have been neck and neck with the Red Sox. Since they did not, it appears that the Red Sox superior offense Reebok Baltimore Ravens #52 Ray Lewis Realtree camo Jersey
will lead them to an American League Crown. The biggest indirect loser will be the World Champion San Francisco Giants. Their main strength has been their deep rotation. Now that strength is no longer as helpful as it seemed only a few hours ago.

20 Dec 10 SEC Championship Preview: How South Carolina Will Beat Auburn

Kevin C. Cox/Getty ImagesThe Line: Auburn -4Over/Under: 62.5 The No. 1 ranked Auburn Tigers will look to stay perfect in the 19th SEC Championship Game today against the No. 18 South Carolina Gamecocks. South Carolina has never played for an SEC Championship, but Steve Spurrier coached seven of them with the Florida Gators. His all-time record in the game is 5-2. This game marks the fifth time that two teams have played each other in the regular season and then again in the SEC Championship; a meaningless stat. When these two teams met in September, it was Auburn that emerged victorious. I'm not so sure the same will happen Saturday in Atlanta. South Carolina took a 27-21 lead into the fourth quarter earlier in the year against the Tigers. The Gamecocks' offense proceeded to turn the ball over on all four possessions in the quarter. After two fumbles by Gamecocks' quarterback, Stephen Garcia, Spurrier decided to pull him in favor of freshman Connor Shaw. Shaw managed to drive inside the Auburn 30-yard line twice before throwing an interception to end both drives, and ultimately the game. Auburn showed the same resolve that they have displayed several times this season: They step up when it matters the most. What South Carolina Must Do to Win South Carolina faces the task of Reebok Minnesota Vikings #69 Jared Allen Realtree camo Jerseystopping Cam Newton and the Auburn Tigers' offense. A tall task indeed.Few teams have slowed this offense down—none have succeeded at completely stopping them. The key for the Gamecocks lies in their offense. Protect the Ball The Gamecocks are going to have to avoid turning the ball over. They succeeded in not turning the ball over in the first matchup, before turning it over four times in the 4th quarter. They will diminish their chances of winning with each turnover they make. Auburn is not a team to give away points to. Get the Ball to Alshon Auburn isn't the only one with a defensive mismatch. Auburn's secondary really has no answer for Alshon Jeffery. He torched them for 182 yards on nine catches in their first meeting. Other NFL caliber receivers have also done the same to Auburn this season, but it has been to no avail. Still, the overwhelming mismatch should draw double coverage and open some other areas up Reebok New England Patriots #12 Tom Brady Realtree camo Jersey for the Gamecocks offense. Run the Ball Marcus Lattimore must get the ball early and often. Auburn has been stingy against the run lately, but if South Carolina can open up the holes early, they will be able to keep the Auburn offense on the sideline. Lattimore is the ex-factor for South Carolina. Iexpect Jeffery to wreak havoc on the secondary, but Lattimore can deliver the knockout punch. He's going to need at least 20 touches. South Carolina has made a habit of not feeding him the ball when they lose—they can't this time. What Auburn Must Do to Win The Tigers didn't have any trouble running the ball against South Carolina earlier in the year. I expect the Tigers to pound it out on the ground once again. Put the game in the hands of Cam Newton and you can do no wrong. Kevin C. Cox/Getty ImagesStay True to Your Game I noticed that Auburn ran the I-Formation against Alabama on a 3rd and short situation early in the Iron Bowl--only to get stuffed. It was quite a perplexing move that begged the question: why didn't Cam Newton get that carry? They just need to do what they do best--and that's run the football. Convert Red Zone Opportunities The Gamecocks are tough to score on inside the 20-yard line, but Auburn converted 4 of 5 opportunities earlier in the year.Auburn is a very difficult team to Reebok New Orleans Saints #9 Drew Brees Realtree camo Jerseystop in the Red Zone, converting 50 of 57 Red Zone attempts this season. Auburn will need that same kind of success. Even one stop could mean the difference in this game. Avoid Big Plays on Defense The Tigers defense allowed 10 plays of 15 yards or more earlier in the year to South Carolina. If they can find a way to neutralize Jeffery or Garcia, they will be one step closer to beating the Gamecocks. The Outcome Both teams are capable of winning this game. Interestingly enough, that can be said of a lot of Auburn's games this season. They are a battle-hardened squad that have survived what most championship teams usually go through in a season. South Carolina had Auburn where they wanted them in their previous match-up, and are certainly capable of doing the same thing on Saturday. The Gamecocks are third in the nation in sacks per game. As evidenced by Alabama, you have to blow this team up at the line of scrimmage. The team that does that will win. It takes a lot to rattle Cam Newton, but if the Gamecocks at least harass him for the entire game—he will lose confidence. I don't think Auburn will have an answer for Alshon Jeffery. On the flip-side, South Carolina doesn't have an answer for Cam Newton. Which skill players will step up the most? We will be in for an entertaining match-up that will likely go back and forth. South Carolina is eager to exact revenge on the Tigers. The Gamecocks win this one, 37-28.

19 Dec 10 Fantasy Football: Hot Pickups for Week 11

Rick Stewart/Getty ImagesFantasy Football: Hot Pickups - Week 11Fred Jackson is mysteriously only 55 percent owned in Yahoo! leagues and with his breakout game, coupled with the injury to C.J. Spiller, he needs to be owned in all leagues. F-Jax went off against the Lions for 133 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries and 37 yards and a touchdown on six receptions.Mike Williams of the Seattle Seahawks went off again and is sitting at only 39 percent owned in Yahoo! leagues. ‘BMW’ Big Mike Williams finished the day with Reebok Pittsburg Steelers #83 Heath Miller Realtree camo Jersey
an impressive 11 receptions for 145 yards. There is no reason he should be available in 60 percent of leagues, as he has been a monster with three 10+ reception games in his last five.Mario Manningham had a huge game in Steve Smith’s absence with 10 receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown and needs to be owned as long as Steve Smith is out. Smith is set to be out for at least two more weeks which means Manningham needs to be owned in more than just 65 percent of leagues. Check your wire just in case.Keiland Williams got the surprise start for the Redskins and responded with an amazing three touchdowns. He had two on the ground and one through the air, racking up 89 yards rushing and 50 yards receiving. Keiland Williams is a hot pickup for week 11Chris McGrath/Getty ImagesWe don't project more than a 10-12 touch role going forward, but this performance is too good to ignore...for fantasy owners or Mike Shanahan.Jerome Harrison exploded in a blowout victory for 109 yards and one TD on 11 carries for the Eagles and is worth a look in deeper leagues. LeSean McCoy owners should view him as a must-have handcuff. He got extra burn in a blowout, but has earned himself an expanded role going forward with his impressive performance.Jacoby Ford looked electric and broke out for 148 yards on 6 receptions and has heavily impressed in a season where he was supposed to be buried on the depth chart. He is worth the add in all dynasty leagues and is worth a look in deeper redraft formats. He also added a kick-off return TD and had over 300 all-purpose yards.Rob Gronkowski had a tremendous game for the New England Patriots with 3 TDs and 72 yards from 5 receptions. Needless to say, he is worth a look in all leagues especially after fellow rookie Aaron Hernandez got on Tom Brady’s bad side with a sloppy drop. He is currently only 9 percent owned and is worth the speculative add for the stretch run.Mike Thomas Reebok Arizona Cardinals Larry Fitzgerald Realtree camo Jersey
had 8 receptions for 149 yards and 1 TD including a final seconds 50-yard tipped bomb from David Garrard. Mike Thomas is only 25 percent owned and has serious upside going into the stretch of the fantasy football season.Anthony Fasano had 5 receptions, 107 yards and 1 TD for the Dolphins and his fantasy value is boosted with Tyler Thigpen under center as opposed to Chad Henne. He is worth an add as an insurance tight end for the stretch run.Jermaine Gresham had 9 receptions, 85 yards and 1 TD for the Bengals and is a solid TE2 with TE1 upside. He should be owned in all PPR leagues and is worth the insurance add as the fantasy playoffs approach.Benjamin Watson is emerging as Colt McCoy’s most trusted target and finished this Sunday’s game with 5 receptions for 74 yards. He is worth an add in deeper leagues and stands to act as excellent insurance down the stretch run.Brian Hartline had 5 receptions for 98 yards for the Dolphins and is worth a look in deeper leagues. He has been demoted to third receiver duties but still functions as a vertical threat, which allows him to remain a fantasy threat.Deon Butler had 4 receptions, 66 yards and a touchdown against the Cardinals and looks to be a nice "end of your bench" WR with flex2 upside. Deon Butler may provide some value in deeper leaguesEzra Shaw/Getty ImagesHe obviously has more value in deeper leagues, but he is cementing himself as the Seahawks clear-cut No. 2 WR and his fantasy value is rising for the rest of the season.Danny Amendola had yet another strong game with 7 receptions for 51 yards and a touchdown. Despite him continuing to show up in the box score and be a steady fantasy option he is only 38 percent owned.Brandon Gibson had a good game for the Rams and made his PPR owners very happy with 8 receptions for 72 yards and he is worth the add in PPR leagues. Dynasty leaguers will want to avoid with Sam Bradford’s receiving corps due for an influx of talent this off-season.Arrelious Benn caught his second TD in as many games and while he is not as attractive in PPR leagues he is a worthwhile add in the deepest leagues. He finished the day with 1 TD from 2 receptions and 29 yards andReebok Baltimore Ravens #5 Joe Flacco Realtree camo Jersey
figures to see his role expand as the season progresses.Jason Avant looked good on Monday Night Football and had 5 receptions for 76 yards and 1 TD. He is worth an add in deeper leagues as end of the bench depth. He will get a big boost in the event of injury to any of the Eagles top two receivers.

18 Dec 10 Should Brett Favre Be Benched and Brad Childress Fired from Minnesota Vikings?

Jonathan Daniel/Getty ImagesBrett Favre and his 3-5 Minnesota Vikings went to Soldier Field to face off against the 5-3 Chicago Bears. Four quarters later, the Vikings boarded the plane home 3-6 and likely out of the playoff hunt. Favre cost his team another victory. Just like he did against Green Bay two weeks ago, Favre threw costly interceptions at crucial times. Favre was 18-31 for 170 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. He also lost a fumble, ending the game with four turnovers. Speaking of turnovers, Favre has accounted for 21 ofReebok Baltimore Ravens #52 Ray Lewis Realtree camo Jersey
the 23 turnovers the Vikings have as a team. Has the time come for the Ole Gunslinger to put his guns in the holster for good? There is no logical reason why the Vikings should continue to play Favre just to play him. It has become painfully clear he cannot get it done and they should part ways with him. Yes, I am aware Favre passed for 446 yards last week. I am aware that was a career high and the Vikings won a game they should have lost. But Favre cannot consistently do this year what he did last year. Favre looks like a beat-up old man trying to summon the guile that used to be there, but is no longer available. Should the Vikings bench Brett Favre and fire Brad Childress?Should the Vikings bench Brett Favre and fire Brad Childress?Yes74.2%No25.8%Total votes: 1,455Despite his short-comings, I have always stated if Favre is healthy and the team is competitive, he gives the Vikings the best chance to win. I can no longer subscribe to this. Favre has cost this team too many victories this season against division foes due to his erratic play. Childress has improved his winning total each year he has been head coach. He’s gone from winning six games his first season to winning 12 games last season. For his efforts, he was awarded a contract extension by the Vikings organization. The time has come for a change. Bottom line: Childress has lost the team. He figured by releasing Randy Moss that the problems would subside and go away. He was pointing the finger at the wrong guy. Before Reebok Chicago Bears #54 Brian Urlacher Realtree camo Jersey
Moss arrived there were problems: Now that he's cut, problems still prevail. The two constants were Childress coaching the team and Favre playing quarterback. So where do the real problems lie? The Favre experiment is officially over. Favre’s play is hampering the team on the field. His off-the-field problems are more of a distraction than what the mainstream media lets on Even though the Jenn Sterger situation has taken a back seat in the media, it must bother him. The Vikings need to make a change. Take a page from the Cowboys in what they did with Wade Phillips. Stephen Dunn/Getty ImagesGet rid of Childress and bench Favre. Replace Childress with Leslie Frazier and hand the car keys to Tarvaris Jackson for the rest of the season. Then the team can finally be built around the running of Adrian Peterson, instead of the 41-year-old arm of Brett Favre. Favre has indicated this indeed will be his last season no matter what. Even if he goes back and forth like he normally does on whether to play again next season it doesn’t matter: Favre hasn’t played well enough this season for the Vikings or any other team to want him back. Then he can finally be confined to his home in Hattiesburg, Miss., whether he wants to continue to play or not. Reebok Chicago Bears #6 Jay Cutler Realtree camo Jersey
Furthermore, he could face a suspension from the NFL and be sued for sexual harassment for the Sterger situation as well. Better to bolt now on your own terms, rather than be forced out. Vikings fans need to face it: The Brett Favre party is over. Email Dexter directly. Follow him on Twitter. Read about Sports & More from Dexter. For Media Requests please contact Public Relations.

17 Dec 10 Fantasy Football Waiver Worthy Week 12: Buy'em or Deny'em

Streeter Lecka/Getty ImagesThere were some surprising performances from Week 11, but does that mean the players are worth owning? Let’s take a look: Mike Goodson – Running Back – Carolina Panthers With DeAngelo Williams having been placed on IR and Jonathan StewartReebok Oakland Raiders #21 Nnamdi Asomugha Realtree camo Jersey
still on the sidelines from a concussion, Goodson received his second start and was impressive. He had 22 carries for 120 yards and added five receptions for 31 yards. Stewart had been ineffective, even when he was healthy, averaging just 3.0 yards per carry (208 yards and one touchdown on 69 carries). He hasn’t had more than 43 yards in a game, despite having as many as 14 carries in a game. With what Goodson has shown the past two weeks, despite the Panthers having no passing game to speak of, you have to think that he’s earned the lead back duties. While he did fumble the ball twice this past week, the Panthers have little reason not to continue feeding him the ball and letting him learn on the job. With the opportunity for him comes potential for fantasy owners, meaning he’s worth owning in all formats. Verdict – Buy ‘Em Keiland Williams – Running Back – Washington Redskins Clinton Portis actually drew the start with Ryan Torain still out of action, but he once again suffered an injury, ending his day prematurely. Williams got the bulk of the carries from that point, picking up 68 yards on 23 carries (and six receptions for 27 yards). Torain is battling a hamstring injury, and the fact is that he has not outperformed Williams by much this season. On 91 carries, Torain has 391 yards (4.3 yards/carry) and three touchdowns. They are fine numbers, but it is far from a lock that he returns to lead back duties once healthy. If you are a Torain owner, you should definitely handcuff yourself with Williams, just in case. Even if you’re not, the idea of Williams taking over lead back duties makes him worth stashing as a depth option, if you have room on your bench. Verdict – Buy ‘Em T.J. Houshmandzadeh – Wide Receiver – Baltimore Ravens He’s a big-play receiver for Joe Flacco, picking up two catches for 79 yards and a touchdown in Week 11. One of the receptions went for 56 yards, his longest play since 2004 (62-yard reception). With Ray Rice, Anquan Boldin, Derrick Mason and Todd Heap in the mix, it’s hard to imagine Houshmandzadeh becoming a featured option in the offense. He hasn’t had more than three receptions in a game and chances are that isn’t going to change. Verdict – Deny ‘Em Nate Burleson – Wide Receiver – Detroit Lions With Jahvid Best hurt, as well as falling behind in the second half, the Lions employed a pass-first attack. Three players had at least nine targets: Burleson, Calvin Johnson and Brandon Pettigrew. Burleson finished the day with seven receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown. It’s the Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers #86 Hines Ward Realtree camo Jersey
second time in the past three weeks that he’s had at least 90 yards receiving. It’s the fourth time in his last six games that he’s had a touchdown. It’s the fourth time in his last five games that he’s had at least six receptions. In other words, he has become a very productive second receiver, as defenses focus on Johnson. At this point, he has developed into a usable option for those in three-wide receiver formats. Verdict – Buy ‘Em Steve Breaston – Wide Receiver – Arizona Cardinals He led the team with 12 targets, while Andre Roberts & Larry Fitzgerald each had 11. It’s not hard to dismiss the potential value of Roberts. He’s the third receiver behind Breaston and Fitzgerald, and in an offense that is not pass-heavy and doesn’t have a trustworthy quarterback, it’s impossible to use him. As for Breaston, he’s now had at least 90 yards in three of the past four games. The only negative is that he hasn’t been able to find the end zone in that span, but the fact that he’s producing makes him worth considering in deeper formats. Verdict – Buy ‘Em Nate Washington – Wide Receiver – Tennessee Titans It’s obvious that Randy Moss is still being incorporated into the offense, as he had no receptions on just three targets. Washington was the benefactor, with five receptions for 119 yards. How long can we really expect that to continue? Plus, you have to remember that this is an offense centered on Chris Johnson, even if both quarterbacks were healthy (Vince Young left Sunday’s game with a thumb injury and Kerry Collins is battling a calf injury). Especially now, with a rookie quarterback primed to take over, it’s hard to trust him. Verdict – Deny ‘Em Joel Dreessen – Tight End – Houston Texans He’s stepped in for the injured Owen Daniels and looked good against the Jets with four receptions for 106 yards and a touchdown. Of course, the Jets secondary is a daunting task for any receiving corps, and they held down both Andre Johnson (4 receptions for 32 yards) and Kevin Walter (2 receptions for 16 yards). That’s not going to happen in most weeks, meaning Dreessen isn’t quite as likely to produce. With how unpredictable tight ends are to begin with, he’s not worth the gamble, especially with the potential of Daniels retaking his job when healthy. Verdict – Deny ‘Em Sidney Rice – Wide Receiver – Minnesota Vikings It was his first action of the season and it showed, as he had just three receptions for 56 yards despite being targeted 10 times. Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers James Harrison Realtree camo Jersey
There’s little doubt that he and Brett Favre will get on the same page sooner or later, and it’s obvious that Favre wants to get him fully integrated into the offense. With the talent that we all know he has, he’s a must-own if you have the room on your bench to keep him stashed. He’s not worth playing right now, but in a few weeks, he easily could develop into a must-play option. Verdict – Buy ‘Em David Gettis – Wide Receiver – Carolina Panthers One big play will do a lot to skew a player’s numbers, won’t it? An 88-yard touchdown catch helps to make his numbers look usable (2 receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown), but you can’t expect him to do that very often. Coming into the week, he had just 23 catches for 308 yards and two touchdowns. Given the unknown that the Panthers quarterback position has become, there’s no way you can trust him at this point. If he’s never going to play, what’s the point? Verdict – Deny ‘Em Rusty Smith – Quarterback – Tennessee Titans He appears in line to take over the starting role for Tennessee, as Vince Young was injured and has also been criticized for his behavior (click here for the nfl.com report). Regardless, at this point, once Kerry Collins is healthy, it is going to be his job. Smith’s time is going to be limited, and it also is hard to imagine the rookie being overly successful in the role. Verdict – Deny ‘Em What are your thoughts on these players? Who would you pick up? 16 Dec 10 Kansas City Chiefs Look To End Road Woes Against Seattle Seahawks

Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel has been playing well of late, and needs to continue this against Seattle this week.Doug Pensinger/Getty ImagesEvery game becomes very important for the Kansas City Chiefs at this time of the season, and this Sunday's road game against the Seattle Seahawks will Reebok Minnesota Vikings #4 Brett Favre Realtree camo Jersey
be no different. The Chiefs come into their Week 12 match-up with the up and down Seahawks as a team with something to prove. What they are trying to prove is that they can win on the road in the NFL. Heading into this weekend's game, the Chiefs are a dismal 1-4 in games away from Arrowhead this season. That is going to have to change in order for this team to be able to clinch it's first playoff birth since 2006, when they won the AFC Wild Card. The Seattle game this Sunday is just one of three remaining road games left in the 2010 season for KC, and looks to be a winnable game in many ways for Kansas City.First of all, Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck has been very inconsistent this season, as he has thrown only eight touchdowns whileserving up nearly as many picks(7). He also has a QB rating of 79.4, which is good for the 25th best rating in the league.Another area where Seattle struggles is their running game. Their rushing offense ranks 30th in the league with around 84 yards a game, and their offensive line has just as often struggled with getting a consistent push from game to game.Who wins this game?Who wins this game?Chiefs87.7%Seahawks12.3%Total votes: 367Kansas City's defense has done well against the run this season, but in order to Reebok Minnesota Vikings #69 Jared Allen Realtree camo Jersey

Oakland Raiders Lose 33-17 To Miami, but There's No Fat Lady Singing Yet

Stanford Routt: Can the Oakland Raiders afford a 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey White jersey
weak link in the secondary?Ezra Shaw/Getty ImagesWho is this team? Seriously folks. How does an NFL team start off shaky, then win three games straight, only to lose horribly to the recent two. It's hard to tell if they are a playoff team or just lucky. In point, how did the Oakland Raiders defeat the Denver Broncos by 59 points, breaking some historic records, then play at home and appear, well, unbalanced. Unbalanced is the best way to describe what we saw today. Iwasn'tupset as much as I was disappointed to see the Oakland Raiders lose again. For the Oakland Raiders, the season could be ending if they don't get their act into gear and start using players that are playing at 200 percent. The Kansas City Chiefs are pulling away with today's win and the San Diego Chargers are also one game ahead of the Silver and Black. Where does that place the Oakland Raiders? They are now representing the AFC West third best at 5-6. This ties them with theTennesseeTitans, the Seattle Seahawks, the Washington Redskins and theHoustonTexans. These are not bad teams and compared to last year the Raiders should be ecstatic. However, for the fans and theOaklandRaiders, they need to get things right and take these last games. Can it be done? Yes. Does Oakland have the heart to win those games? Maybe. Rookie WR Jacoby Ford once again played some great football! He started the game with a kickoff return TD and then caught a pass from QB Bruce Gradkowski and ran in for his second TD against the Miami Dolphins. In fact, in the first quarter it was back and forth as the defenses played well. How many of their last 5 games do you see the Oakland Raiders winning? How many of their last 5 games do you see the Oakland Raiders winning? 117.4%229.7%322.6%411.0%5, they can do it!!!19.4%Total votes: 155However it was the weak links that hurt the team. One of the links was Walter McFadden. At 5'10" and 180 pounds, McFadden had the task of covering Miami Dolphins WR Davone Bess and it was simply embarrassing for the Raiders. Bess able to complete at least a dozen third downs and he could not be stopped. So, my question is whydidn'tcoach John Marshall not replace him with a faster player who knows how to look for the football also. After the first two completions byDavoneBess on third downs it was pretty obvious that Miami found a weakness and they used it. At 6'3" and 250 pounds I may have considered a 4 Brett Favre White jersey
big LS like Jon Condo. The passes to Davone Bess were short enough that Condo may have squashed Bess a few times. Those plays may have been the negative, butthe hugepositive was once again Jacoby Ford. QB BruceGradkowski also deserves credit as hemaintained his composure and got the ball to Jacoby Ford for the TD although he was hit hard. The best part of the Oakland Raiders is definitely the defense. Tommy Kelly, Richard Seymour, Lamarr Houston and Matt Shaughnessy. These guys are solid and the sacks were great. Both Tyvon Branch and Michael Huff also hurt the offense One player I do question is Stanford Routt. He is a veteran, but he was beaten quite a bit. Should QB Jason Campbell finish the season for the Oakland Raiders?Should QB Jason Campbell finish the season for the Oakland Raiders?Yes, 88.5%No, Bruce Gradkowski is still the better of the two11.5%Total votes: 157Time is critical for the Oakland Raiders. First off they need to decide which QB is the leader and let him train harder with the WRs and TEs. The Oakland Raiders QBs must get the timing down on the plays, especially with WRs Ford and Murphy. The weapons are there for the Oakland Raiders but sync is off and must be restored or they are out. Imagine if Stabler had this team. Although the Dolphins scored 33 points the Oakland Raiders should have matched those TDs. What happened to the passing that scored 59 points? ShouldQBJasonCampbellhave played today forthe Oakland Raiders? At this point, I am unsure of the two. In all likely hood, Jason Campbell will finish off the season and get 3 more wins. Plays such as the Wildcat needed improvement. The Wildcat was actually attempted today against the Miami Dolphins and it looked horrible. It was no where near how the Arkansas Razorbacks used it with RB Darren McFadden. It was as if the play was called but the players had never reallypracticed. Next week the Oakland Raiders travel to Steelers 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey
San Diego and play the Chargers for a second time. The San Diego Chargers are looking to chase the Kansas City Chiefs and get some payback on the Silver and Black. This animosity leaves the Oakland Raiders with no choice but to get that win. Is the fat lady singing yet? Probably not, but if the Raiders lose to the Chargers, she will be singing the blues along with a million others.

Michael Vick, Adrian Peterson, Randy Moss and Today's Top NFL News

Michael Vick is a hot topic lately, as his Philadelphia Eagles are currently atop the NFC East division at 7-4, and the Eagles are currently holding a 14-10 lead over the Houston Texans right now in the second quarter. Vick was slowed down for the first time last week against Chicago, but is looking to lead the Eagles to victory tonight. The Eagles and New York Giants are tied atop the division at 7-4. Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson, despite suffering a sprained right ankle in Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins, is expecting to play in the Vikings' game against the Buffalo Bills this week. Titans receiver Randy Moss is already frustrated in Tennessee—big surprise—and he's come out and voiced his displeasure. It appears at the moment he is at least not making this about him, but more about the team's current slide. For more on all of this and Today's Top NFL News, read on. The 2010 Cincinnati Bengals' debacle of football jersey
a season has been brutal on their fans. The apathy level of the fan base is dangerously high. The city of Cincinnati won't even be able to see the team's final four home games. The Bills game and this Sunday's Saints game will be replaced by a terribly boring '80s movie. They aren't even showing another NFL game! The other two (Browns, Chargers) aren't expected to sell out either. The general consensus amongst fans has been to blow up the team. Cut Carson Palmer and Chad Ochocinco. Don't re-sign Cedric Benson and head coach Marvin Lewis. And please don't bring Terrell Owens back. Sure his numbers are some of the best in the NFL this season. He is third in the NFL with 914 receiving yards and second in receptions with 65. It's not his fault the defense has taken a huge step backwards. But it is his fault that the offensive game plan has changed so dramatically this season. What made the Bengals so good last year? Pounding the opposition with the running game. The '09 Bengals wore down teams with their smash-mouth AFC North approach. But once they signed Antonio Bryant (how'd that turn out?) and drafted WR Jordan Shipley and TE Jermaine Gresham, the philosophy began to change. When T.O. signed the writing was on the wall: The Bengals were now a passing team. God forbid the Bengals even dare to use the ultra sensitive Owens as a spare part. Instead, each week's game plan has revolved around T.O. Even Chad is now an afterthought. I bet it's because the Bengals are afraid of Owens and his explosive personality. The team won't call him out despite numerous occasions when it was appropriate to do so. Owens has repeatedly alligator-armed balls that have ended up getting picked off. Indianapolis Colts jersey
He jogged in the two minute offense on multiple plays against the Colts when his team had a chance to win. He refuses to lay out for a ball over the middle. He gives up on deep balls before they even reach him. It's clear to anyone that watches: T.O. cares about T.O., and that's it. To be fair, Owens hasn't been a problem in the locker room whatsoever (as far as we know), and he really hasn't done more than stating the obvious when talking about the Bengals. Yet it's clear that the coaching staff, and even Palmer to a degree, feel the need to keep Owens involved in the offense. Nobody on the Bengals wants to deal with an infamous T.O. outburst. This week Owens was asked about returning to the Bengals next season: “Of course. I think a lot of rumors are swirling out there about everything, coaching staff and I don’t know. I let all that stuff kind of play itself out. My agent and I will get together after the season and see how it goes.” Noooooo!! Say it ain't so! The words "of course" are the last thing the Bengals want to hear from T.O. Ever wonder if adding Owens has distracted Chad mentally at all? Ochocinco hasn't complained about his lack of touches compared to Owens. But when has work production and success ever increased when one class clown is paired up with another? They are the only active players that have their own cable show! How much mental energy is wasted every week just thinking about their show? Imagine the amount of time the duo has not been prepping for games, since it's been obvious the team was going straight to the AFC North basement? Twitter has been a forum that more and more NFL players are beginning to jump on. But every other player in the league follows the cheap nfl jerseys
Twitter Kings: T.O. and Chad. They are the two most frequent twitters, they also u-stream, and oh yeah, did I mention that they had three shows between them air this summer? The diva receiver squad doesn't work. The '10 Bengals have proven this. So cut your losses and say goodbye to both of them. T.O. has been a dream for stat heads but a nightmare for this team. T.O. in 2011? Thanks, but no thanks. We will end this with a gem from T.O., a comment that tells you everything you need to know about what he thinks of himself: “I’m still getting behind the best corners in the league. So now what do they say?"

Green Bay Packers: Is James Starks a Star in the Making?

Jonathan Daniel/Getty ImagesAs one scans the box score of Sunday’s Green Bay Packers game, a bunch of familiar names show up on the stat sheet. Aaron Rodgers, Greg Jennings, Clay Matthews and A.J. Hawk are all at the top in their respective categories. Then, you get to the top of nfl jerseys
the rushing yards column and you are met with a name that even some “cheese heads” may be unaware of: James Starks. Now before I continue, I must say that this is somewhat of a “homer” inspired post. Starks and I not only share the same hometown of Niagara Falls, N.Y., but we also attended Niagara Falls High School at the same time. There is where I saw the early blossoming of a potential All-Pro NFL running back.During his high school days it was very apparent that Starks was a special talent. Not only did he excel in football, actually playing quarterback, but he was also a key piece to a2005 state championshipbasketball team that included the likes of Paul Harris and NBA point guardJonny Flynn.Starks would later go on to play at the University at Buffalo where he would set the school’s all-time rushing record. Going into his senior year, Starks’ draft stock couldn’t have been higher as he was projected to be a first-round pick in the upcoming draft. That would all come to Dallas Cowboys jersey
a crashing halt when Starks suffered ashoulder injurythat forced him to miss his entire senior season.Starks would elect to have surgery in hopes to still make it to the NFL. April soon approached and several rounds would pass in the 2010 NFL Draft while Starks waited for that life changing phone call. Then, with the193rd overall pickin the draft, the Green Bay Packers selected him in the sixth round.Soon after, Starks went off to Packers training camp with hopes of making the team. Unfortunately, Starks would be placed on the physically unable to perform list because of a hamstring injury. Starks rehabbed the injury and finally got his shot as he was activated for Sunday's game.Starks truly relished the opportunity as he carried the ball 18 times for 73 yards and returned two kickoffs against the San Fransisco 49ers.It appears this may be just the beginning for Starks because the Packers have been looking for someone to carry the workload in the backfield after Ryan Grant went down with a season-ending injury. Starks is football jersey
already getting some publicity as asleeper pickfor fantasy football. It will be exciting to see how Starks will perform down the stretch for Green Bay.

San Francisco 49ers Arnaz Battle

Recently, the San Francisco 49ers extended the contract of Arnaz Battle. After three years with the team, Battle was given a 4-year deal worth $4.5 million for what he's brought to the table? Why did the 49ers organization give an injury prone player an extended welcome as if he were a valuable commodity? In three season's Battle has hardly earned a new contract as he hasn't proved to anyone that he can stay healthy. In 2003 he was hampered for at the beginning of the year with a knee injury, and then missed a few games as he was placed on the 43 Polamalu black jersey
IR with a toe injury. Then in 2004 he played in 14 games but saw limited action as he was bothered by thigh and hamstring problems. In 2005 he has played a limited role as he has yet again been plagued by knee problems. Since the 2003 season he has only played in 31 games and has only started seven of them. Also in those three seasons he has just 37 catches for 454 yards and only three touchdowns. In this 2005 season he has just 29 receptions for 311 yards through just 16 weeks.Earlier in December, 49ers head coach Mike Nolan said," We've been talking to Arnaz's people", "Things look favorable for that situation. He will be part of this as we go forward," Nolan said. "We don't want to jeopardize his career with us." Nolan might be putting too much faith into Battle, who hasn't been able to stay on the field long enough to give him a fair assessment.Nolan has done well with what he's been given so far, but this isn't the wisest of moves for a passing offense that is dead last in the NFL. Battle's production has increased over the last three years, but it isn't very wise to extend a player's contract that has not been of good health or an option for his coaches. The 49ers are really taking a gambling on Battle's potential for the future. This notion to keep Battle in camp is very brave, and this organization better hopes his luck improves. From top to bottom the San Francisco 49ers need to be revamped, and a passing game that is averaging just 117 yards per game needs to be at the top of 4 Brett Favre White jersey
the priority list. Maybe Battle will pan out, but if his injury prone self doesn't stay healthy it will just be another mistake for the 49ers organization. The risk might be too much for the rebuilding team to bear, especially if they want to make progress in the future with their passing game.

In the 1980s, the San Francisco 49ers were the NFL's

In the 1980s, the San Francisco 49ers were the NFL's bell cow -- the best franchise in the league under the guidance of coach Bill Walsh and General Manager Carmen Policy.Even though Walsh left after the 1989 season, Policy kept the Niners stocked up through the mid-1990s, and then the salary cap caught up to them and turned them into a gutted also-ran for much of this decade. But now the young duo of Mike Nolan and Scot McCloughan seems to be making all the right moves to turn the 49ers back into the 4 Brett Favre White jersey
playoff team they were for so long under Walsh and Policy. The 49ers went 7-9 last season, with a sweep of the NFC West champion Seattle Seahawks, and many pundits are predicting that San Francisco will take command of the division this year. While that might be a bit premature -- the Seahawks are still a formidable team and 49er quarterback Alex Smith still has much to learn -- Nolan and McCloughan have continued to remake the Niners into what looks like a better team than the one that went 7-9 last season. The duo has focused largely on reshaping the defense, which was one of the league's worst in 2006 (28th in yards allowed and last in points allowed). Nolan wants to use an attacking 3-4 scheme, and he and McCloughan have spent the offseason gathering players who should fit it.First, they made it a priority to retain Bryant Young, who has been a mainstay along the defensive line since he was drafted in the first round in 1994. Then they opened free agency with a bang, signing cornerback Nate Clements, safety Michael Lewis and nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin on the first day. The next day, they re-signed cornerback Walt Harris, whose 11th season in the NFL (and first in San Francisco) was perhaps his best. Nolan and McCloughan then added linebacker Tully Banta-Cain and re-signed fellow LB Hannibal Navies. And that was all just a prelude to a draft weekend that netted six more defenders. In just two months, Nolan and McCloughan have revamped their defense with 10 new faces -- with as many as five expected to be in the starting lineup when the 49ers host the Arizona Cardinals in a Monday night doubleheader to open next season. While Clements was the ace catch in free agency, linebacker Patrick Willis was the main man on draft day as the 49ers got the guy many wanted and expected them to grab with the 11th pick.Armed with 10 choices, Nolan and McCloughan negotiated the draft with savvy. They appeared to give up a lot when they dealt their 2008 first-round pick to New England to climb back into the first round for tackle Joe Staley with the 28th selection. But that was a calculated risk, because if the 49ers do in fact make the playoffs next season, that pick will be pretty Dallas Cowboys jersey
low anyway.Of course, that giveaway was offset when Nolan and McCloughan shrewdly put themselves back into the first round in 2008 by giving their second-round pick in this draft to the . They also received a fourth-round pick in that deal, which replenished the fourth they had given to the Patriots in the first trade. Essentially, the 49ers found a way to get a second first-round pick at what could turn out to be almost no additional cost (unless the 49ers backslide and end up giving the Patriots a top-15 pick).Nolan and McCloughan also brought in reinforcements for the D-line, adding ends Ray McDonald and Jay Moore and tackle Joe Cohen.Beyond the first-round maneuvering, though, the best deal the duo made was to snag receiver Darrell Jackson from the Seahawks for a mere fourth-round pick. McCloughan, a former personnel guy for Seattle, took advantage of the bad blood between Jackson and Seahawks management. Now, the 49ers suddenly have a No. 1 receiver for the first time since Terrell Owens left after the 2003 season.Of course, the Jackson deal does not come without injury questions: He has missed 13 games over the past two years due to knee and toe ailments. But for a guy who caught 10 touchdown passes last season, a fourth-rounder looks like quite a steal. Jackson and Ashley Lelie (signed in March), along with Arnaz Battle and third-round pick Jason Hill, should form the best receiving corps the 49ers have had since Owens left.Just like that -- in two months -- Nolan and McCloughan have reconfigured the receiving corps and their entire defense. With 10 new defenders -- and the right kinds of defenders in the front seven -- Nolan can now install the full 3-4 scheme he has wanted to use since he arrived 4 Brett Favre White jersey
two years ago. If it all works out, Nolan and McCloughan just might become the next Walsh and Policy by ushering in a new golden era for the 49ers.Daily San Francisco 49ers coverage, courtesy of RealFootball365.comGot a bone to pick with a newspaper columnist, talk show personality or television analyst?
