Summer slip cools prospects for fall;Schedule doesn't get any easier with Yankees and Rays on

Three weeks into their make-or-break month, the Blue Jays are still making it - but that could change.

and Tampa Bay Rays keep winning, the Jays are hoping not to break, but going 4-5 on a road trip that ended Sunday with a 5-0 loss to the Red Sox certainly dented their long-shot playoff hopes. The Jays are a respectable 10-9 in August, but the toughest month on their schedule is about to get tougher.
With nine August games left, the Jays face five more dates against the World Series champion Yankees - 10-0 winners over the Mariners on Sunday - and historically stingy Rays, who own the two top records in baseball.
Manager Cito Gaston acknowledges the Jays could have used two extra wins on the road trip.
"We had a chance to win two more games and we didn't do it," Gaston said. "It was Chargers jersey
okay. Not bad. We've had worse. ... It doesn't cut it (in the AL East) but that's what it is."
The Jays emerged from the all-star break as the hottest-hitting team in baseball, leading the majors in homers (52) and slugging (.487) in 33 second-half games heading into Sunday.
But Sunday's game - not to mention a successful road trip and precious momentum - escaped when the Jays' bats faltered. After going 7-for-14 with runners in scoring position in Friday night's 16-2 win, the Jays went 0-for-10 in scoring situations.
Though the fourth-place Jays still nurse slim hopes of making the playoffs, or at least catching the elite three atop the AL East, they're aware of the reality of time.
With 38 games left, the Jays languish 101/2 games out of the wild-card spot, and none of Bears jersey
the teams ahead of them are slowing down.
"It's getting late in the season to be saying 'it's all right, it's all right,' " said outfielder Travis Snider, "but we've just got to keep grinding."
